How are Ethereum gas fees calculated?

Ethereum gas fees are calculated as: Fee = Gas Used × (Base Fee + Priority Fee). Gas used depends on the transaction type: a simple ETH transfer uses exactly 21,000 gas units, while a complex DeFi interaction may use 200,000-500,000 units. This spreads the mainnet gas cost across thousands of users. In 2026, L2 transaction fees are typically 100-133x cheaper than mainnet for the same operation. After EIP-4844 (Proto-Danksharding) introduced blob transactions in March 2024, L2 costs dropped by another 10-100x, making routine DeFi interactions on L2 cost fractions of a cent rather than dollars.

When is the cheapest time to transact on Ethereum?

Ethereum gas prices fluctuate with network demand. Historically, fees are lowest on weekday early mornings UTC (2-8am UTC, corresponding to late night US and early morning Asian hours) and on weekends when DeFi activity is lower. During NFT mint events, major DeFi liquidations, or market volatility spikes, gas prices can surge 10-50x above baseline. L2 networks are largely immune to mainnet congestion.
