What is restaking and how does it generate additional yield?

Restaking allows ETH that is already securing the Ethereum consensus layer to simultaneously secure additional protocols called Actively Validated Services (AVS). EigenLayer pioneered this model in 2024: stakers deposit their staked ETH (or liquid staking tokens like stETH) into EigenLayer, which then redistributes those security guarantees to AVS operators who pay rewards in return. The result is a stacked yield: base ETH staking APY (around 3.5%) plus AVS reward APY (typically 2-6% in 2026), generating a combined return without deploying additional capital.

What are the risks of restaking compared to regular staking?

Restaking adds two key additional risk layers on top of standard ETH staking risk. First, slashing risk: AVS operators can have their restaked ETH slashed if they misbehave or fail to meet liveness requirements, beyond the standard Ethereum validator slashing conditions. Second, smart contract risk: EigenLayer and LRT protocols introduce additional contract complexity that could contain bugs. In 2024-2026, no major EigenLayer slashing events occurred, but the risk is structural and real. Third, liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) add their own redemption and depegging risk. Only restake capital you are comfortable having at elevated risk.

What is the difference between liquid staking and liquid restaking?

Liquid staking (e.g., Lido stETH, Rocket Pool rETH) issues a tradeable token representing staked ETH, earning Ethereum consensus rewards. Liquid restaking (e.g., EigenLayer's eETH via EtherFi, Renzo's ezETH) goes one step further: the underlying staked ETH is also deposited into EigenLayer or Symbiotic to earn AVS rewards on top of base staking yield. LRTs are composable — they can be used as DeFi collateral on Aave or Pendle to stack a third layer of yield, but each layer adds compounding risk.
