Bridge Liveness Assumptions
Bridge Liveness Assumptions is a crypto market concept used to structure analysis, execution, and risk decisions with measurable rules. It helps practitioners translate noisy data into consistent portfolio actions over time.
A bridge's liveness assumption is about whether it keeps working, not whether it keeps funds safe. If the relayers, signers or provers it depends on go offline, transfers stall even though nothing has been stolen. Some designs allow users to exit through the base chain if the bridge halts; others just leave funds stuck. Knowing how a bridge behaves when its operators disappear tells you how long you might wait on a bad day.
Liveness and safety are different questions
When attackers got hold of 5 of the 9 validator keys on the Ronin bridge in 2022, they could approve fake withdrawals, and that was a safety failure. The same small signer set was a liveness risk too, since five of those nine machines going dark would have stalled every withdrawal.
How common designs stall
A multisig bridge stops if too few signers are online to reach its threshold. A relayer based bridge stops if no relayer is willing to pay gas and deliver your message. Some messaging systems process messages strictly in order, so one failed message can block everything behind it until it's fixed or skipped. LayerZero's docs describe this for apps that turn on ordered delivery.
Exits that don't need the operator
Rollup bridges usually have a way around a stalled operator. Well designed rollups let you submit a transaction straight to a contract on Ethereum and force the rollup to include it after a set delay. Since June 10, 2024, OP Mainnet has allowed anyone to propose the chain's state and prove a withdrawal, so users can withdraw without relying on a trusted third party. Arbitrum's AnyTrust chains fall back to posting all data on Ethereum if their committee won't sign. External bridges between separate chains usually have no such path.
What to ask before bridging
Who has to stay online for my transfer to finish? If they vanish, is there a way out through the base chain, and how long does it take? For large amounts, we'd lean toward a chain's own bridge with a forced exit, even if it's slower, over a fast bridge that leaves you waiting on its operators.
