Crypto Exchange Fees Decoded: Maker-Taker Model, VIP Tiers, and How to Minimise What You Pay

Understanding Crypto Exchange Fees: What You're Actually Paying

Exchange fees are the single most controllable cost variable in active crypto trading — yet most retail investors have only a vague understanding of what they are paying, to whom, and what alternatives exist. The fee structures of major crypto exchanges in 2026 have grown increasingly complex, incorporating maker-taker differentials, VIP tier programmes, token discount mechanisms, withdrawal fees, stablecoin spread markups, and funding rate charges for perpetual positions. Understanding this fee landscape systematically — and knowing which fee categories have the largest impact on your specific trading activity — can materially improve net returns without requiring any change to your trading strategy or risk management approach.

The Maker-Taker Model: Rewarding Liquidity Provision

The maker-taker fee model is the standard for most crypto derivatives and spot exchanges. Makers — traders who place limit orders that rest on the order book, adding liquidity — pay lower fees than takers — traders who execute market orders or aggressive limit orders that consume resting liquidity. The rationale is that market makers provide a valuable service (enabling other traders to execute immediately at known prices) that deserves economic recognition through fee discounts. On Binance, standard spot maker fees are 0.10% and taker fees are 0.10% — with reductions to 0.08/0.10% at VIP1 and progressively lower through VIP levels. On Bybit, standard perpetuals maker fees are 0.02% and taker fees are 0.055%. On Coinbase Advanced, maker fees start at 0.06% and taker fees at 0.10% for users above $50,000 monthly volume. See our guide to choosing a crypto exchange for how fees fit in with everything else when you pick a venue.

BNB and Native Token Discounts

Most major exchanges offer fee discounts for users who hold and pay fees in the exchange's native token. Binance's BNB discount — currently 25% off standard fees when BNB is used for fee payment — has been one of the most durable retail fee optimisation strategies in crypto. At standard fees of 0.10% taker, the BNB discount reduces effective taker fees to 0.075%. On $100,000 monthly trading volume, this saves $25 per month — not transformative, but meaningful compounded over time. OKB on OKX, BGB on Bitget, and similar exchange tokens provide analogous discounts on their respective platforms. For active traders already holding exchange tokens for other reasons, ensuring fee payment is configured for native token discounts is a zero-effort optimisation.

The Hidden Costs: Withdrawal Fees, Spread Markups, and Funding Rates

  • Withdrawal fees: Most exchanges charge fixed withdrawal fees per network — typically $1-5 equivalent for ERC-20 tokens, less on Layer 2 networks. For investors who move assets frequently between exchanges and self-custody wallets, withdrawal fees can accumulate. Minimise by batching withdrawals and using exchanges with competitive withdrawal fee structures for your most-used networks.
  • Stablecoin spread markups: Some exchanges — particularly simple consumer interfaces — mark up stablecoin conversion prices by 0.5-2% rather than charging explicit fees. This is equivalent to a much higher fee than the advertised rate suggests. Always check the actual exchange rate versus the spot price before executing stablecoin conversions on consumer interfaces.
  • Perpetual funding rates: For traders holding leveraged perpetual positions through multiple funding intervals, cumulative funding charges can represent a significant cost — often exceeding trading commissions over holding periods of days to weeks. During strong directional market moves, funding rates can reach 0.1-0.3% per 8 hours, imposing 0.3-0.9% daily carry costs on leveraged longs. Factor funding costs into position sizing for any perpetual position held beyond a single trading session.

The aggregate impact of fee awareness on annual trading performance is typically underestimated. Reducing effective taker fees from 0.10% to 0.05% by qualifying for a higher VIP tier, enabling native token discounts, and shifting more executions to maker orders can save thousands annually for active traders — without changing a single risk management or strategy decision.
