GMX v2: How the Liquidity Pool Perpetuals Model Works

GMX pioneered a distinctive approach to decentralised perpetuals trading that remains architecturally unique among major DEX perp platforms: a liquidity pool model where a basket of crypto assets serves simultaneously as the counterparty to all trades, the collateral backing all positions, and a yield-generating vehicle for liquidity providers. Unlike order-book-based perp DEXs (dYdX, Hyperliquid), GMX traders are not matched against other traders — they trade directly against the GLP liquidity pool, which profits when traders lose and absorbs losses when traders profit. This model enables zero-slippage execution for positions within oracle-price-governed limits, while creating a fundamentally different risk/reward dynamic for both traders and liquidity providers.

GMX v2: What Changed and Why It Matters

GMX v2, launched in 2023, significantly redesigned the protocol's architecture to address limitations of the original model. The most important change: rather than a single GLP pool holding all assets, GMX v2 implements isolated GM (GMX Market) pools — separate liquidity pools for each trading pair. This isolation prevents contagion between markets: an exploit or extreme event in the ETH/USD market does not affect the BTC/USD pool. Each GM pool holds both the long collateral (the base token) and the short collateral (typically USDC), and LPs choose which market pools to provide liquidity for — enabling capital allocation to the pools with the most attractive fee yield rather than passive exposure to all markets simultaneously.

v2 also implemented a funding fee mechanism that dynamically adjusts the cost of holding long vs short positions based on imbalance — if the market is heavily long, long holders pay higher funding fees to shorts, incentivising rebalancing. This mechanism reduces the LP pool's net directional exposure to trader positioning imbalances, improving the risk profile of liquidity provision. See our funding rates guide for the full mechanics of how funding balances open interest.

GLP and GM Liquidity Provision: The Real Yield Case

GMX's liquidity provision model has been one of the most successful examples of real yield in DeFi — yield derived from genuine trading activity rather than token inflation. GLP (v1) and GM pool (v2) holders earn 70% of all trading fees generated on their respective markets, payable in ETH or AVAX (on Arbitrum and Avalanche respectively). At peak GMX v1 volumes, GLP was yielding 20-40% annually — extraordinary returns for what is effectively a basket of blue-chip crypto assets serving as market maker collateral. In more normalised markets, GM pool yields typically range from 5-15% annually from fee income alone, plus any gain or loss on the underlying token basket's price performance.

The risk side of GMX liquidity provision is the converse of the fee yield: when traders achieve large aggregate profits (as occurs during periods of sustained directional price movement), LP pool holders absorb those losses. A sustained Bitcoin bull run that creates aggregate long trader profits can erode GM pool NAV meaningfully. LPs who understand this dynamic use GMX liquidity provision tactically — entering during sideways or mean-reverting markets when trader P&L tends to be negative and exiting before high-momentum directional moves that favour large directional traders. Our DeFi yield farming guide provides the risk assessment framework for GMX's LP model, and our crypto tools monitor current GMX volumes and pool yields.
